What does this button mean?

RSS (Real Simple Syndication) is an increasingly popular and simple way for news content to come to you, instead of you having to seek it out yourself through traditional web searches or subscribing to multiple email lists. You may have noticed the increasing presence of similar RSS or XML buttons on popular news sites or web portals.

Unlike subscribing to an email newsletter or news distribution list, with RSS your email address is not involved in the process. Therefore you don’t have to worry about opt-in/opt out email processes, or receiving unwanted email at inconvenient times. And unlike searching for news through traditional web searches, with RSS you receive fresh content from the publishing site, not 5 or 10-year old search engine results that won't go away.

RSS however, is not intended to replace traditional news distribution methods. Appfluent RSS feeds are provided as an added convenience to visitors of appfluent.com, and will deliver content based on the specific Appfluent RSS feed that was chosen at time of subscription.

So how does one use RSS?

Currently, RSS content is read through what is called a "newsreader". There are many different kinds of news readers both in the form of downloadable software as well as web-based services, and many popular web browsers are starting to integrate RSS readability as well. For example, if you have the latest version of the Firefox, Safari, or Opera browser, you already have an RSS reader! The forthcoming Microsoft IE 7.0 is also reported to be including RSS capabilities as well.

There are many news readers available, some free, some not. Here are just a few:
NewsGator, My Yahoo!, Bloglines, FeedReader, FeedDemon (These links are provided as a convenience, and does not imply endorsement by Appfluent Technology).

So how does one subscribe to an Appfluent RSS feed?

To subscribe to any Appfluent Technology RSS feed, simply click on the RSS button that you want to subscribe to. Copy the resulting URL from your browser's address bar (not the web code) into your RSS newsreader, and you will be instantly subscribed to that specific RSS channel feed. Different newsreaders may have different processes. Refer to your reader's help menu for further assistance.
